I have long drooled over the vintage covers of Vogue magazine, particularly the whimsical designs featured in the years pre-1920. The iconic illustrators of that time hand-created imagery that transports the viewer to a world we wish we could enter. How incredible would it have been to receive a genuine work of art in the mail twice a month?

I wanted to make something inspired by these fantastically stylized pieces, and I personally love how it turned out.

It’s called Decembering.

The word ‘December’ actually sounds sparkly, doesn’t it? It invokes swirling snow that’s new and clean, a dark, frozen sky full of stars, evening falling early, lanterns and candles twinkling in windows, all of it transforming the outdoors to something insulated, beautiful, akin to how I imagine living inside a velvet-lined jewelry box would feel.

I don’t for a moment fancy my piece should sit next to the work of masters of the craft like Helen Dryden and George Wolfe Plank, but I hope it honors them.

Maybe real December can be a little harried, not quite live up to our fantasies, and obviously, no one would actually wear shoes like that in the snow. But wouldn’t it be fun if you could? Wouldn’t it be fun to wear what she’s wearing, go where she’s going, in a horse-drawn carriage under a sky of swirling, frozen stars, have that air of mystery sprinkled on us?
